Our Mission
Our mission is to challenge established filmmaking practices in order to liberate cinema from its industrial anchors.
Cinema has stalled, and its rigid system of storytelling-by-capital has failed audiences everywhere. Where other art forms have protected spaces for experimentation, film has no such practice and no such audience.
That’s where we step in. We devise filmmaking practices that begin with a body, an environment, a thought, and we do so in intensive group workshops where we invite the most challenging and interesting practitioners from film, dance, poetry, to help us radically rethink what cinema is in order to find new audiences.
Primary films is a unique organisation in the world of film that provides young creatives, actors and media makers opportunities to collaborate in film making research workshops as well as experiencing the full creative process of making films.
What, who and how?
Primary Films helps artists both from the creative industries to research their practice in cross-discipline workshops that examine social, psychological and environmental issues. We create a unique research environment which combines film-making with ecological public health values for these areas of focus.
In partnership with Studio Weekend, Primary Films offers an inclusive gateway into the film industry with a focus on producing content that includes addressing and safeguarding against the impacts of climate change.
Each project examines the role art and representation have in local and world ecology, and how we can progress, resolve, or even disrupt the discourse.
